Link metadata drop downs fields to make values in field B dependent upon the selection in field A

As a user I want to be able to select options in field A to reduce the options available in field B.

For example, selecting Architect in the discipline field alters the options available in the Category field.

Practical use of functionality?

Selecting a value in Volume narrows down the options in Location to ensure invalid combinations are not selected.
What is the impact of not doing this?

Taxonomy fields allow selection of dependent values. Rather than delivering this enhancement it may be more appropriate to enhance taxonomy capabilities to deliver the same end user benefits sought here.

    Taxonomy fields already permit dependent values. What are the advantages of linked drop downs over Taxonomy fields? And could we enhance taxonomy fields to bridge any gaps?
